Fernie Alpine Resort is proud to announce the return of Junior Freeskiing to Fernie. This year’s event will be brand new as we have partnered with the International Freeskiers and Snowboarders Association (IFSA) to be one of their National Event stops. Fernie is one of only 3 Canadian stops on their 2013 Junior Freeski North American Tour. Winners of the Fernie event will gain points towards being the North American Junior Freeski Champion and win great prizes from our sponsors! Come out and watch some of the best junior freeskiers in North America display their skills here at Fernie Alpine Resort.
Competitors will display their skiing skills on natural terrain while being judged on 5 categories – Line Choice, Control, Fluidity, Technique and Style/Energy. To align with the IFSA qualification standards the event is open to skiers ages 12-18 with 4 categories – Boys 12-14, Girls 12-14, Boys 15-18 and Girls 15-18. All age cut off dates are based off of the age turned prior to December 31, 2012. The only exception is juniors 18 years of age may stay in the junior category until turning 19. Even if said junior turns 19 in the middle of the season, that athlete must move into the adult category events.
Entry fee for the event this year is $160 US (including tax) and includes an event t-shirt. Registration will be done online at www.athletepath.com. Discounted lift tickets for competitors will be available onsite at registration/check in.
All competitors MUST have a 2013 IFSA membership or one day membership in order to compete in the event. Memberships can be purchased on the IFSA website www.freeskiers.org.
Being part of the IFSA North American Junior Series, registration will be done according to the series pre-qualification registration protocol. 60% of the athletes will be pre-qualified into national events based off their 2012 IFSA junior series rankings, 35% of the remaining spots will be allocated to ski team quotas and 5% will be open. For more information on pre-qualified status and ski team quotas please visit the IFSA website www.freeskiers.org.
Registration will be done in waves to accommodate this qualification process. Competitors must have their IFSA Membership before registering for the event. Registration will open as follows:
Pre-qualified registration (invite only) – Opens Nov 19 at 6pm MST and closes Nov 20 at 6pm MST

Please note that is is MANDATORY that all minors that are 15 years of age and younger that are competing in a RCR Event MUST have their parent or legal guardian sign the Event Waiver for the competitor IN PERSON IN FRONT of a trained Resort’s of the Canadian Rockies staff member.
A legal guardian is defined as the minor’s parent, a court appointed guardian, or coach of a program the child is registered in. Coaches must be current members of the Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance (or American equivalent) and certified as a coach.
Please note this means that a competitors parent cannot sign the waiver for their child’s friend (even if that child is travelling with you).
If a parent or legal guardian will not be on site during registration, they can go to any RCR Resort or RCR Calgary Office and sign the event waiver (and parental consent form) ahead of time. Competitors must let the Event Coordinator know that they have done so prior to registration day so the waiver can be checked as complete.
If a parent or legal guardian is not near a RCR Resort or Calgary Office and cannot attend the event they must let the Events Coordinator know so a waiver can be administered via Skype or Facetime BEFORE their child leaves for the competition (as the signed waiver must be brought with the competitor to registration).
Competitors that are 16 years of age or older can sign the event waiver themselves at registration.
The Fernie Junior Freeski will also be part of the brand new RCR Jeep Junior Freeski Series which includes Junior events at Fernie Alpine Resort, Kimberley Alpine Resort and Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. Details on the series are coming soon but keep in mind that the Kimberley Jr. Freeski will take place on Feb. 9-10 and the Kicking Horse Junior Freeski event will take place March 2-3. Both the Kimberley and Kicking Horse event will be IFSA Regional qualification events and are open to skiers ages 7-18 (so both events will include 7-11 categories).
A huge thanks to our sponsors and partners including the IFSA, Jeep, Rossignol and Smith Optics.
