January 5, 2010 - Revelstoke, BC - Come join us for Avalanche Awareness Days at Fernie Alpine Resort this coming Friday January 8th, and you’ll have a front-row seat as Fernie’s snow safety team demonstrates the use of explosives to trigger controlled avalanches within the resort boundary. You’ll hear from people whose lives have been changed by avalanches, you’ll watch as highly trained avalanche rescue dogs locate “victims” buried in the snow, and you’ll get a close look at snow science in action with demonstrations from the University of Calgary’s Applied Snow and Avalanche Research team—one of the world’s foremost applied avalanche research programs.
These are just some of the day’s highlights. There will be numerous photo and interview opportunities throughout the day. See the schedule below for more details:

0730 Load on Timber Chair
0800 Get media in position for bombing (just outside Lost Boys Café at top of Timber Chair)
0830 Avalanche control blasting demonstration
0900 Media breakfast, news conference and interview opportunities
1030 Mock rescue with avalanche dog, snow science demonstrations, etc.
1230 Download to base area
1300 Media lunch
1400 Youth education demonstration, and Fernie’s Avalauncher in action!
Please be dressed for the outdoors but skis are not necessary. You will be walking short distances in snow. Hope to see you there!
