50 Years of Skiing/Riding in Fernie - The Celebration Begins

On Saturday November 26th, 2011 the skiers rode a chair lift that began 50 Years of skiing/riding in Fernie.  On the "First Chair" were Heiko Socher, his wife Linda Socher, ski coach Dr. Geoff Seagram and sports retailer Greg Barrow.  Heiko, the legendary creator and builder of Fernie Snow Valley from 1962 through to 1997 was honoured and humbled to be asked to be the first skier up the mountain and the first skier to enjoy the early start to the season.  Heiko, who is very active at 81 years of age was joined by his skiing companion and wife of nearly 55 years, Linda.  Linda established the first ski retail business in Fernie and since leaving the Ski Base in Fernie, manages to ski nearly every day of the ski season in Fernie.  Dr.  Geoff Seagram, a local ski coach with the racing program in Fernie, joined for the first run on his coaching day and season.  At age 75, Geoff is the oldest of the still active ski coaches in Canada.  He was the Race Doctor for the Men's downhill ski events at the 1988 Calgary Olympics and established the first pediatric surgery practive in the Province of Alberta before retiring to Fernie in 1994.  For 11 years, local legend Grag Barrow has held the first chair position on opening day at Fernie Alpine Resort.  Greg was thrilled once again to be on the first chair in the 50th year of skiing/riding in the Lizard Range in Resorts of the Canadian Rockies.

Bow Cycle Calgary Staff Loves Fernie Mountain Biking!

Our friends at Bow Cycle Calgary came down for opening weekend and had a blast!

"There are seemingly endless little whoops and compressions to air off or into, plus long sections of trail that reward letting go of the brakes and just hanging on. Really a fantastically fun and flowy trail network – and we only rode half of it!"

Fernie Bike Crew Update #5 - Forecast: Sunny, Highs Near 18C with 100% Chance of Legendary Biking

Well, it’s finally here. Fernie Alpine Resort opens our lifts for summer operations on June 25th at 10:00AM sharp. We’ve been reading your Facebook posts, replying to your e-mails, feeling all those good vibes, and yes – that’s right, we’ve even seen you up here inspecting our hard work when you thought no one was looking.

Here is the lowdown; all trails accessible from the Elk Chair will be open. There will be no biking from the top of the Timber Chair as there is still over 2 meters of snow covering the upper trails and access roads; however, Bin Logdin, Cripple Creek, Lower Rumplestumpskin, lower TNT, lower CCDH, and lower Bike Thief will be open and accessible with a short uphill ride to the top of the Deer Chair.  The grand total is over 34 trails ready for you on opening day, the most of any bike park in Canada last I checked.

As you take that first spin of the year at Fernie, please remember a few tips:
  • Take a warm up run. Try a slow ride down Deer Trail, Mr. Berms, or Top Gun to get back in the swing of things.
  • Make an inspection ride on each trail before you up your game to full speed. A lot can change in the off seasons.
  • Respect all signage and heed warnings. Several of our trails have seen substantial work in the last month. Expect new features, soft berms, loose sections, and  reroutes. Watch for cautionary signage at trailheads.
What can you expect in the near future at Fernie? Our trail crew will be transitioning focus and evaluating how to dance around the Timber side snowline to get you onto your favourite dark side trails. The first Scott Thursday Night Race is on Thursday, July 7th – probably the best $5 you will spend all summer. Brush up on your technique for those races, participate in a Friday night skills clinic, or take an introduction to mountain biking lesson with our amazing instructors Jean and Steve. If a more leisurely stroll is your thing, sign up now for an Alpine Wildflower hike with Nature Bob on July 16th. All programs are booked through Guest Services – 1-250-423-4655.  Check out our NEW Fernie Alpine Resort Summer Blog  to receive updates all summer from our Trail Crew, Mountain Patrol, Nature Bob, and Special Events.  Guest Services will be open on Friday June 24, 9am-5pm.  Come in to buy/pick up your summer season pass so you're ready for opening day!

Hope to see you all here bright and early on Saturday! Remember – you can report on mountain emergencies to our Patrol by calling 250-430-7778. Please continue to let us know how we are doing by speaking to staff, stopping by Guest Services or sending us an e-mail, your feedback has been amazing and we endeavour to make this legendary place as much yours as it is ours.

Sincerely,
Your Fernie Alpine Resort Bike Crew

Fernie Alpine Resort Bike Crew Update #4: Andale – Un-Delay

It is early morning in the Elk Valley; woolly clouds surrounding the rocky peaks with ominous mist dancing through the trees. A little less than a week before Fernie opens for summer operations and our must-do list is a mile long. Our hearts and hands quiver with anticipation and excitement; ready to put our best foot forward on June 25th. Rain does not help much. La Niña, what was once everyone’s favourite little Mexican girlfriend is now lingering like a bad tequila hangover.

The Bike Crew is in a mad rush to get the final machine and hand work done. Recently, we rebuilt all the corners on Mr. Berms. They looked so good and rode so smooth that it called for a total rebuild the traverses as well. Our new trail building machine has been putting some of the old flavour back into lower Top Gun.  Look for a little hip-berm, six pack and wall ride if the weather cooperates. Eville is still on our finishing list with 2 berms and a wooden boardwalk yet to be built.  If we can clear the last bits of snow off of upper Boom, Hollow Tree and Aggravated Assault you can expect every Elk side trail and the lower Timber side trails to be open on June 25th.

So get going today! Andale, un-delay - make your plans now to hike, bike or stay at Fernie on opening day. With great packages from $82.00 a night how can you afford not to? Check out www.skifernie.com for more great deals and updates. The lifties are hired, the bar is stocked, the trails are buffed...let’s get this party started.

Sincerely,

Your Fernie Alpine Resort Bike Crew

Fernie Bike Crew Update #3: What I Know For Sure

Moving dirt forty hours a week gives you a lot of time to think. Usually, we are formulating jokes about each other or deciding how we will tackle the growing To-Do List before opening day. While silence is not rare amongst us, there are moments it has a certain character that make the entire crew pause. It is in these fine minutes that genius is often born – frequently ideas for new lines or features are finally spoken. On occasion, when we can shake out the dewy cobwebs, it is microcosmic moments of clarity about trails and life in general.

Trail Crew Life Rule #1: When your karma is clogged by clutter, clear it out to make way for newer, better things. Old features out – new features in! We put a new bridge and line in after the swan dive on Rubber Ducky.  The berms on Monorail, Top Gun and Mr. Berms  have been rebuilt adding another 2 feet on average of pure railing fun. In addition, Holo Bike has a new reroute that includes fall away berms and stump rollers.

Trail Crew Life Rule #2: Best laid plans will always fall through – have a back up plan. Or a back up hoe. We are now plowing ahead with our new sub compact skid steer loader. This thing is awesome, but don’t take our word for it. Take a spin down Deer, CCDH, Big Rig, or Eville on opening day June 25th.

Trail Crew Life Rule #3: Figure out who you are and be good at it. Ask anyone what makes Fernie Bike Park special and you will hear that it is our technical single track. While we offer a wide variety of trails for all ability levels and styles, it is rides like Rumplestumpskin, Hollow Tree, and Deer Trail that we are most proud of. These trails use roots, rocks, rolls and natural terrain to add challenge as they wind through old growth and alpine forests. The little gnomes have been at it again this week, buffing all your favorites down to a brown sugar shine.

Above all else, what I know for sure is that this summer at Fernie Alpine Resort will be Legendary. See you here in 12 days.  Fernie Alpine Resort opens for Summer Operations on Saturday June 25th.

Sincerely,
Your Fernie Alpine Resort Bike Crew

Fernie Bike Crew Update 2 - The Trails That Built Us

Here we are, a few days into Bike Crew Operations for the 2011 summer season at Fernie Alpine Resort. This week has passed like a faint blip on the geological time frame that is our summer operations lifespan, but exploded off the starting line with the impact of The Big Bang Theory itself. Our crew of gnomes have hiked kilometres of your beloved rides; triaging trails, buffing berms, displacing debris, and evaluating erosion. We were even able to spend time improving the flow on Deer Trail. Look for new berms, improved sightlines, and resurfacing on opening weekend.
It is an odd thing to re-visit fourty-two trails in four days. A solemn reminder of over ten years of summer operations and the incredible staff that have dirtied their hands working the same soil we work today. Like a fine wine or reforested pine, we grow and get better year after year. Our passion for this Legendary Place clenches like tight root fingers in its loamy soil; our memories nestled in between them forever like mossy pads. What memories fall with each twist and turn of the trail for you at Fernie? Will this be the summer you finally participate in the Lungbuster or take a guided hike with Nature Bob? Will you ride faster, better, stronger or hike to new heights up Polar Peak.
As we continues to work next week under towering old growth cedar it will be hard not to be reminded that growing is, in fact, forever. We are moving forward test driving a new trail building machine on Eville, Lower Canada Cup, and Top Gun. Hundreds of linear feet of fir and cedar have arrived ready to join the forest once again as new bridges and features. Our hand crews are eagerly waiting to dig their McCleod teeth into drainage issues on Rubber Ducky and Alternate Flight Pattern. Machines are warming up as we speak ready to force the last of the snow off the lower mountain. Standy-by this could get exciting.

Sincerely,
Your Fernie Alpine Resort Bike Crew

Another Legendary Summer Season is not too F.A.R. Away!

The Big Dig - Fernie Bike Crew officially started up for the season Monday May 30th! We are working hard to wake up the trails from their extended winter slumber... a few still stubbornly holding tight to the remaining 2m + blanket of snow (cough cough Rumplestumpskin). A few days of rain followed by a week of sunshine and temperatures in the teens means we should see substantial melting and drying out in the near future. This week will be spent assessing winter damage, clearing snow and debris, and probably giving long pep talks and whispering sweet nothings to our lizard side trails. As tempting as it may be, for your safety to prevent further damage, we are asking people not to bike or hike at the resort quite yet. We all just have to face the fact that summer biking right now and some aren't. Soon enough grasshopper... another legendary summer season is not too F.A.R. away!

Top Pro Mountain Biker rates Fernie Alpine Resort Bike Park as one of the best

The Coastal Crew led by pro mountain bike rider, Mike Hopkins, stopped by Fernie Alpine Resort last summer for some wicked riding. “Mike Hopkins, Scott Pro Rider and the Coastal Crew are just incredibly talented riders and we were stoked to have them visit Fernie Alpine Resort and tell us what they thought of the riding available” says Matt Mosteller. “These guys are some of the best mountain bike pros in the world and they really put Fernie Alpine Resort to the test” added Mosteller.

Mike and the Coastal Crew summed Fernie up with these words, “Fernie is the premier bike park of the most infamous North American mountain range: The Rockies. The Trails that string their sinuous selves around the mountain’s peaks vary in every imaginable category. There are a collection of rocky, steep, technical trails that feed into strips of forested loam and finish with wide open berms and jumps, which are quite possibly the most decadent of mountain biking’s many joys. It is an irrefutable truth that Fernie is a DH and Free Ride Heaven.”

DECLINE Mountain Bike Magazine Features Legendary Fernie Summer!

Time to start thinking about summer at Fernie Alpine Resort!

From the DECLINE Article Featuring Fernie: "Of Indian Descent; a foreign mountain biker visits BC to find familiar territory" which recounts the adventures of the contest prize winner Vinay Menon. Vinay is a pioneer of mountain biking in India and spent 2 months traveling through BC tasting what we have to offer. The last 2 days of the trip brought him through Fernie where the bike patrol showed him our best; he loved Rumplestumpskin so much that he made the 4.6 km DH trip three times in a row with several broken ribs and a broken hand (previous injury from another mountain bike journey)
"Fernie's got some of the wildest trails I've found amongst the five bike parks I rode. The trail crew is doing a great job there, keeping the trails as natural as possible"

Meet SCOTT Pro Team Riders at Full Throttle Festival

We are super stoked to have the SCOTT Pro Team Riders, featuring Mike Hopkins and gang, at Full Throttle this weekend.  Just for kicks, they are up for the challenge if anyone wants to go head to head on the dual slalom course and might even rip it up on the Super D Downhill course to amp up the excitement with the other competitors.  The team will be signing autographs in the base area plaza on Saturday (exact time TBD).  Mike Hopkins is a fantastic rider and we have embraced him as a Fernie Alpine Resort ambassador.  He came out for last year's event and wowed us all with his awesome skills and enthusiasm for the sport.  He was here in early season for a filming with the Coastal Crew who's footage was premiered on the big screens at Crankworx 2010 in Whistler.  Mike also did a previous filming and photo shoot in Fernie last summer for which he received major coverage from PinkBike.com and Dirt Magazine (cover shot) for doing the "Unofficial World's Highest Air on a Mountain Bike".   Come meet the SCOTT Pro Riders and enjoy a weekend of fun at Full Throttle.

Thanks to Our Facebook Fans for Such Great Feedback!

Here are some of the recent comments that our Facebook fans posted to our fan page - Much appreciated fans!

Words can't even begin to describe how awesome the resort is in the summer! It has some of the very best trail I have personally ever ridden, theres something for everyone berms, wallrides, technical trails and the awesome atmosphere doesn't even stop at the trails. The community in Fernie is down right amazing, I've met some of the nicest people during my time in fernie. There is NOWHERE else I would rather spend my summer than at the resort. Its fernie that keeps me riding my bike. - Bryan R.

Me and 3 friends had the trip of a lifetime in 2005! We drove all the way from Halifax NS, in a Ford Ranger with the flip up suicide seats for 56 hrs! We then reached Fernie BC, a place we will never forget! We all quit our jobs in Halifax... and rented a 4 bedroom house for 4 months. We rode at FAR every day for about 5 hrs and then drank every night out of our funnel. Gatorade of course!! A couple of us took part in the Tuesday night race series, held by Kelsey's. We rode the microwave tower and that was also the ride of a life. But Top Gun took the top honors for all of us. It was so fast and flowy with nice berms and dirt jumps. The other memorable ride would have to be the Canada Cup course. The speed you can pick up coming down the shoot is so intense. Your gripping those handlebars for all your worth. when you reach the bottom all you want to do is get back up there. Now since returning to Halifax it is hard to stay motivated to ride after being spoiled with such an amazing bike park, community and terrain.  Thanks Fernie Alpine Resort for making a mark on our lives! - Adam W.

Fernie. One visit to Fernie and you will want to spend a lifetime. I close my eyes and I am there again. - John H.

Great Tips for Beginner Riders Visiting the Bike Park

There are lots of options for any level of rider but it is easy to get in over your head!  We want you to have a fun, safe day and not scare yourself. This list is to help you progress through a level of trail that best suites you. Please warm up and get to know your way around. A GREEN or BLUE trail still present lots of challenges and are fun even for the advanced rider.

Please be advised that there are no EASY trails here.  The Green designated trails are the “easiest” we can offer, and may still be considered “hard” to some people.

The Elk Chair is where you want to be!
Timber Chair (Sat/Sun) is for Expert riders only!

Start with these and see how it goes:

Boom trail to Cedar trail. (wide, some pedaling required)
Boom to Honey Bee trail (wide, some pedaling, some road)
Deer Trail (½ road, ½ single track)
Ben’s Big Rig to Eville (or Honey Bee)(must follow a road after Big Rig to find the start of the other two)

If those trails seem OK, move up to these:

Mr. Berms
Top Gun
Hollow Tree
Ben’s Big Rig to Holo Bike (getting technical with a good sustained steep section on Holo Bike)
Power Carve to Ewok (getting more technical, and Ewok has lots of low ladder bridges!)

If you feel VERY comfortable on these trails, only then should you start to experiment with a Black Diamond trail...

Use the Skills practice area to test your balance!
Race your buddy down the Dual Slalom course!

Remember, only YOU CONTROL YOUR SPEED!
ALWAYS STAY IN CONTROL, pump your brakes, look ahead and take it easy!

Bike Park Looking Buff for Opening!

Trails in the Bike Park are shaping up nicely, thanks to the hard work from our fantastic trail crew and Bike Park Supervisor, Marc Ledoux.  Marc says, "Even with a moist few weeks here in the Bike Park, the trails here are looking buff!  The trail crew are hard at it, fixing ruts, clearing sight lines, and removing fallen trees to make our trails even smoother. Until the snow melts (just a bit more on the Timber side), we are focusing our attention to the bread and butter trails off the Elk chair. We are also improving our base area bike lanes so bikers and trucks don't kiss, and planning to resurface our Dual Slalom track this week - it should be smoother than a fish soaked in chain lube!"

Top Ski Journalist Raves About Fernie

Fernie Alpine Resort is "On the Mark" according to noted Canadian Ski Journalist, Doc POW

DOC POW

– Jan. 17/10

FERNIE, BC — With five powder bowls – the most in the Canadian Rockies of any resort – there is a lot to explore when you get to Fernie Alpine Resort, which is located five minutes outside of the City of Fernie, British Columbia.

The best way to discover a mountain is with a local guide – either a resort host or a ski instructor. In my case, I hooked up with John Avery – aka Jaws – who has called Fernie home for over 12 years now.

“During many of the days my wife and I visited Fernie, it was epic powder – over the top head stuff and I said finally, ‘That is it, we have to move here.’”

There at the beginning

White Pass lift, Fernie Alpine Resort,British Columbia Canada
The White Pass quad carries skiers and riders up into some of Fernie Alpine Resort's best glades and chutes.
DOC POW/SnowSeekers

And so Avery, who had been with Mountain Operations for Marmot Basin in Jasper Alberta, made the move to Fernie with his wife. The Fernie folks didn’t take long to put Avery back to work in what he knew best – mountain operations – and he was on site to install some impressive new access points to Fernie.

The installation of both the Timber and White Pass Quad chairs in 1998 really opened up some stellar new spaces.

Now, thanks to Avery’s efforts those of us who are looking to shred some serious gnar can make our way into the Anaconda Glades off the White Pass featuring some wicked tree lines runs.

Easy access to skiing and riding

“Prior to the install of these lifts, this area was all cat-skiing and backcountry terrain. I used to come in here with my pals and we’d love it, the snow was always so incredible.”  That snow hasn’t gone anywhere, it’s just now a whole lot easier to get at it.

Avery, now a ski instructor with the mountain, spends time with people from all over the world.

“The folks I instruct can’t believe the beauty of everything. Sure the Alps are great, but there are so many less people here, less line ups and from what I hear from my guests, we are a nicer bunch.”

During our day I was grilling Avery for some of his ‘secret stashes,’ those signature runs that no one should miss while they are here, but at first all I was met with a “ahum.”  When dealing with a journalist, many locals don’t want to give up their insider’s tips ‘cause they knows where its going (ie. onto our site here at SnowSeekers), but with a little extra ribbing, I scored some gooders.

Inside tips

“On a nice powder morning hit Morning Glory, not many will be on it and it lives up to its name,” said Avery. “Anywhere in Curry Bowl will not steer you wrong, and if you want to really challenge yourself, head over to Concussion Ridge for some of the steep and deep stuff.”

I know exactly what Avery’s talking about. Even though we didn’t get over there during our day tour, I have been on Concussion a few times, losing all sense of space and time – a cheap ride to planet powder!

“I wake up to the sounds of bombs more days than not around here,” says Avery, whose talking about the avalanche bombs that are continually going off to manage the white gold that just keeps on falling. I must remember to toast the legendary Griz next time I am here.

At Fernie, you can book your mountain host out of the ski school - not only will you get a knowledgeable host, but also a few tips on how to improve your time on the slopes. The nominal charge is given back to you as a gift card to be used on hill. Sounds like an excellent plan. For more on Fernie and its epic offerings, visit www.skifernie.com

A Good Day's Work by Fernie Alpine Resort

A recent comment from a visiting Guest to Fernie Alpine Resort - THANK YOU!

I've been visiting Fernie for the last week or so and just wanted to give you guys some praise. The services on the hill are excellent, its simple to get to all the lifts, the direct to lift card makes it very easy and quick to actually get boarding. The terrain and runs are very well groomed and laid out and are fantastically open so that one can pick out their own route. I love the fact that you guys have so many deep bowls and wide open runs.  Your staff couldn't have been friendlier both in the ticket office, cafes, shops , on the lifts and on the hill. I've boarded in NZ, Austria and now Canada. I would definitely come back to Fernie and will bore people silly when I go home about the quality and value of your facilities.  Well done Fernie, keep up the good work!

Fernie Alpine Resort chosen to host North American Event

Fernie Alpine Resort has been chosen as one of the few Canadian and or North American sites to host the coveted Helly Hansen Big Mountain Battle outdoor Adventure Race February 13th 2010. Fernie Alpine Resort has been hosting the Smith Optics Fernie Free Ski Event for many years recognized as a leading Free Ski Event in North America and is pleased to be the site selected for this coveted Helly Hansen event. Helly Hansen is well known for making some of the best outdoor gear on the planet. Fernie Alpine Resort is one of three new venues in North America that have been chosen to host this event.

The Big Mountain Battle is very similar to a summer adventure race as teams use GPS devices and other orienteering or navigational skills to race through a series of check points. Each participant must find each one of these check points and they are frequently located over great distances across the Ski Area terrain. Fernie Alpine Resort was chosen for it's significant terrain and it's 5 Alpine Bowls. Combine great snow, skiing or snowboarding and incredible terrain and you have one exciting event!

Other resorts chosen to host the Helly Hansen Big Mountain Battle event include- Taos, New Mexico, Squaw Valley, California, and Aspen, Colorado to name a few.

Great Selection of Hikes at Fernie Alpine Resort

Hiking and sightseeing are at their prime at Fernie Alpine Resort.  Before summer comes to an end, let your feet do the walking with a great variety of hiking trails to choose from.  You don't have to be an expert hiker to enjoy some of the best views of the Elk Valley - lots of youth and guests of varying age and fitness levels could be seen hiking up the quick but uphill White Pass Trail (accessible from the top of Timber Express chair) this past weekend.  It is a progressive and at times, steep uphill climb and the rocky terrain does require good, sturdy shoes but at the top awaits a unique view of the valley as well as deep perspectives of Curry and Timber bowl on either side of you.  Standing at the top, you feel the humbling height of the famous head wall that towers above you from behind.   This trail is great for multi-level hikers because you can see your destination from the bottom and always take a moment to rest without worrying how much further (approx 1.5-2hrs return).   The best part is you know that what goes up must come down and so you are rewarded with a downhill return where a refreshing drink awaits you at the Lost Boys Cafe,  before you take a relaxing ride down Fernie's sightseeing lift.  Its adventure and pampering all in one!  And this is just one of the great hikes that Fernie offers!

Fernie Ranked # 3 in City Dog Magazine's Top 10 Dog Friendly Ski Resorts

City Dog Magazine has come up with a list of the Top 10 dog friendly ski resorts covering all of North America.

Maverick enjoying Fernie's snow

Maverick enjoying the famous Fernie snow!

"Out in the Canadian Rockies, your snowbound hound will feel welcomed as well, especially at the Fernie Alpine Resort. Of course you’ll enjoy Fernie too; being that this former-mining-town-turned-outdoor-recreation-haven was recently named number five in Skiing Magazine’s listing of the Top 25 Resorts in North America.

The Fernie Lodging Company offers dog-friendly suites in both its slopeside lodges; Snow Creek and Timberline (www.skifernie.com) . Now while your snow munching German shepherd will have to sit out while you take to the slopes he may be comforted to know that some of his four-legged brethren are busy working on the mountain. Fernie is the home to a number of CARDA (Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association, carda.bc.ca) training dogs."

Fernie Alpine Covered in Outdoors Fun Blog

Fernie was recently covered in an article on the popular Outdoors Fun Blog. A snippet below with link to the full article:

"One of the up-and-coming Canadian ski resorts today is the Fernie Alpine Resort. While this resort is still relatively unknown, it is becoming more and more popular. Fernie is located in the spectacular Kootenay Rockies and is only a three-hour drive from the city of Calgary, Alberta.

The Fernie Alpine Resort is known for the amazing powder snow that it boasts and because it is still unknown as one of the best Canadian ski resorts, you will rarely encounter crowded conditions on the slopes. This top ski resort usually receives about 29 feet of snow per season, so even toward the end of the ski season there is plenty of white powder. Fernie does offer some challenging blue and green runs to keep the experienced skier stimulated. There are also many skiing opportunities for beginners among the 107 designated trails at this resort.

Fernie Alpine Resort also offers what many of the other Canadian resorts do not; the ability to ski-in and ski-out of your accommodations. For many ski aficionados, the chance to go straight from the slopes to your door is the perfect scenario and a delightful benefit that helps to make this a perfect choice for a winter vacation. In addition to the ski-in convenience, Fernie is also family friendly with a childcare center that features ski schools for the little ones."
