The
2003 Race Story
The top mountain bikers from across North America,
and one entry each from New Zealand and Japan,
competed in the Canada Cup Mountain Bike Series
at Fernie Alpine Resort July 26-27, 2003.
The Canada Cup Mountain Bike Series
represents the highest caliber of cycling competition
in Canada with venues across the country. The
weekend of competition began Saturday at 8:00
am with the Pinkbike.com Cross Country event.
A total of 254 racers competed in 14 different
race categories. Winners of the Senior Elite Men’s
and Women’s categories were Mathieu Toulouse
(Mont-Royal, QC) and Annie Tywinski (Edmonton,
AB) respectively.
Sunday’s races featured 102
participants competing in the exciting Rip n’Richards
Downhill Event. With speeds up to 74 km/hour in
the men’s competition and a top speed of
63 km/hour in the women’s event, spectators
were wowed by the caliber of the downhill athletes
on hand. Danika Schroeter (Vancouver, BC) took
top honors in the Senior Elite Women’s category
and Brant Lyon (Valemont, BC) took first place
in the men’s.
